Stone Bramble (aka European trailing bramble) is used for food and as medical plant. The stone bramble is the common bramble species on Iceland and North Europe. It is perennial shrub 25-30cm high can be find on dry ground and stony places. The fruit (berry) is red and 1–1.5 cm in diameter that have just a few large segments (drupelets). Berry contains large stones that gave the name to the plant. The species name saxatilis comes form the Latin word saxum meaning stone, reflecting the stones inside the berry.
Human food
Stone bramble is popular in Russian cuisine. It usually eaten raw with milk and can be used as coloring in preparation of kvass (popular Russian fermented beverage). The berries can be cocked in juice and jelly usually combined with other berries.
Medical uses
A decoction of the root is used in the treatment of relaxed bowels and dysentery, and also in treating the spasmodic stage of whooping cough. The leaves are astringent and a decoction is used to treat dysentery and some types of bleeding (3).
